Understanding brain injury care

Brain injury can affect memory, movement, communication, behaviour and independence in very different ways from person to person. Nurse-led home care builds a plan around the individual, not a one-size-fits-all routine.

What is brain injury care at home?

Brain injury care at home is specialised clinical and personal support for adults living with the effects of a traumatic or acquired brain injury. It combines clinical oversight from a registered nurse with day-to-day support from trained carers, covering cognitive and behavioural needs, communication, mobility, medication and personal care within the person’s own home.

Unlike general home help, brain injury care requires an understanding of how neurological changes affect a person’s thinking, mood, movement and safety, so that support can be adjusted as recovery progresses or needs change over time.

Who benefits from brain injury care?

  • Adults recovering after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as from a fall, road traffic collision or head injury
  • Adults living with an acquired brain injury (ABI), including after stroke, hypoxia, infection or a brain tumour
  • People experiencing changes in memory, concentration, mood or behaviour following brain injury
  • Individuals needing support with seizure management or medication routines
  • People with communication, swallowing or mobility difficulties as a result of their injury
  • Families who need respite, reassurance and a consistent, familiar care team
Traumatic (TBI)

Traumatic brain injury

Caused by an external force — a fall, a blow to the head, or a road traffic collision. Severity and recovery time vary widely between individuals.

Acquired (ABI)

Acquired brain injury

Develops after birth from a non-traumatic cause, such as a stroke, lack of oxygen to the brain, infection, or a tumour.

Cognitive

Memory & concentration

Brain injury can affect short-term memory, attention, planning and problem-solving, often requiring structured daily routines.

Behavioural

Mood & behaviour

Changes in mood, frustration tolerance or behaviour are common and are supported with patience, consistency and a familiar care team.

What’s included

What nurse-led brain injury care includes

Every package is built around the person, and reviewed regularly by a registered nurse as needs change.

Cognitive rehabilitation support

Structured routines that support memory, attention and problem-solving day to day.

Communication support

Patient, adapted communication for people with speech, language or comprehension changes.

Behavioural & emotional support

Calm, consistent responses to mood and behavioural changes, with a familiar care team.

Seizure & medication management

Following individual seizure management plans and administering medication safely and on time.

Mobility & physical rehabilitation

Supporting movement, transfers and rehabilitation goals set by the wider clinical team.

Nutrition & swallowing support

Support with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), following individual guidance.

Personal & daily living care

Washing, dressing, meal preparation and everyday routines, delivered with dignity.

Family & carer support

Reassurance, updates and respite for family members alongside hands-on care.

Recognising seizures after brain injury

Seizures are a recognised risk after some types of brain injury, particularly in the weeks and months following a traumatic injury. Every person supported by Lifetouch Care has an individual plan, and our nurses and trained carers are taught to recognise the early signs and respond calmly and correctly.

What our teams watch for

Signs our nurses and carers are trained to recognise

  • Sudden changes in awareness, staring spells, or unresponsiveness
  • Uncontrolled jerking or stiffening movements
  • Sudden confusion, disorientation or unusual behaviour
  • Changes in breathing, colour, or responsiveness after an episode
  • Following each person’s individual seizure management plan and escalating to emergency services when needed

Common questions

Brain injury & complex care at home — FAQs

What is nurse-led brain injury care at home?

Nurse-led brain injury care means a registered nurse designs and oversees every care plan, rather than a general carer working alone. At Lifetouch Care this covers cognitive and behavioural support, communication support, medication and seizure management, mobility and physical rehabilitation, and personal care, delivered in the person’s own home in Wolverhampton and the surrounding West Midlands.

What is the difference between traumatic and acquired brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by an external force, such as a fall, road traffic collision or blow to the head. An acquired brain injury (ABI) develops after birth from a non-traumatic cause, such as a stroke, lack of oxygen, infection or brain tumour. Both can affect memory, movement, communication and behaviour, and both are supported through the same nurse-led approach at Lifetouch Care.

Do you support stroke recovery and rehabilitation at home?

Yes. Our nurse-led teams support people recovering from stroke with mobility and physiotherapy follow-through, communication support, swallowing and nutrition support, medication management, and encouragement with daily rehabilitation goals set by the wider clinical team.

Can Lifetouch Care manage seizures and other complex symptoms?

Yes. Seizures are a recognised risk after some brain injuries. Our nurses and trained carers are taught to recognise the signs, follow each person’s individual seizure management plan, and know when to seek urgent medical help.

Do you provide 24-hour and live-in brain injury care?

Yes. Lifetouch Care packages are flexible, ranging from a few hours a week to full 24-hour and live-in care, so support can increase or reduce as recovery progresses or needs change.

What other specialist care services does Lifetouch Care offer?

Alongside brain injury and complex neurological care, Lifetouch Care’s trained carers, supervised by NMC-registered nurses, also support tracheostomy care, ventilator care, nebulisation, catheter care, stoma care, IV therapy, complex end-of-life care, dementia care, mental health support, eating disorder support, physical disability support, sensory impairment support, and personal and daily living care.
